Chicago, Illinois, 2013 - in progress

Located in the rapidly transitioning Bucktown neighborhood, this home combines a quiet urbanity with intimate spaces, unexpected moments and a close attention to detail. The project is an extensive reworking of a recently completed spec. house with an emphasis on custom millwork, furniture (custom-designed by Min | Day as well as commercial selections), and an extensive art program including commissioned works (all still to come). Decks on 4 levels and pocket gardens provide outdoor spaces with city views as well as intimate spaces for contemplation.

Scouting photographs by Min | Day.

University of Nebraska, 2005

Asked to modify the Great Hall of the Sheldon Museum of Art (Phillip Johnson, 1963,) we began investigating ways to enhance the activity of this and other under-programmed public areas in the museum. The project begins with the installation of mobile "human infrastructure" that will support a variety of educational, social, and leisure activities not currently served. We also proposed painting the underside of the bridge with "flavor" colors that rotate with the collection (the first is "calypso orange.") Specific projects include a demountable aluminum vestibule for a video gallery and flexible seating.

Bemis InfoShop wins 2013 AIA Small Project Award

Min | Day + FACT won an AIA Small Project Award for the Bemis InfoShop in the "small project construction, object, work of environmental art or architectural design element up to $150,000" category. The award will be presented during the AIA National Convention in Denver, June 2013.

Jury comments:
"This is such a remarkable process! It represents a designer's victory as opposed to an ideologically born, experientially rich element. This project works on many exciting levels. A context is built on triangular patterns cut into a wall of panels and beautifully engages a sculpturally reception desk that double as a bar for entertaining. The reception space looks great, effortlessly orients the visitor and functions very practically. It is playful without being whimsical. This project is an exemplary demonstration of craft in the digital age. The introduction of pattern-making on surface, in concert with the spatial implications of the form of the desk and the adjacent walls, make the whole operate experimentally on timeless principles, yet so appropriately in the context of the societal and economic forces that come to bear in this specific time."

Prototype for Habitat for Humanity

As part of a test program coordinated by Habitat for Humanity International and Public Architecture, Min | Day designed a prototype home that introduces accessibility, sustainability, flexibly and modern approach to living to the low-income housing arena. In contrast to a typical Habitat house (of which there are many variants) the Patio House emphasizes passive solar orientation and indoor – outdoor living for a more intentional site integration strategy. The home combines a layered set of spaces in bands across the site: private rooms on the north separated from open public areas by a band of storage and a private, fenced-in patio or garden to the south. The back yard is kept free for possible gardening or play. While we designed a 3 bedroom / 1 ½ bath home, the prototype accommodates larger and smaller versions as well as different site proportions and orientations. We designed the Patio House in partnership with H. for H. of the Easter Bighorns in Sheridan, Wyoming but the prototype is available in variants for all H. for H. chapters.

Construction:
Insulated slab on grade, advanced wood framing on 24” centers, wood trusses, metal or comp. shingle roof, cedar rainscreen wall cladding.

Energy systems:
Passive solar orientation and built-in shading, super-insulated walls and a high-performance envelope design, on-demand hot water heater.

2012

Designed with FACT for the Salina Art Center in Salina, Kansas, the PenTables are a modular set of asymmetric pentagonal tables based on a pentagonal tiling system. The tables can be composed in variety of arrangements to support a multitude of social situations for art classes to community meetings to large dinners. The tables were built by FACT with parts fabricated by Cornhusker State Industries, the manager of the Nebraska State Prison shops.

We are an architecture practice that draws on E.B. Min and Jeffrey L. Day’s backgrounds in art, landscape, and architecture to provide informed, flexible design for a wide range of clients, sites, and projects – from individuals to art institutions, urban to rural settings, and furniture to large buildings. We explore opportunities for innovation in program, materials, and fabrication, as well as in methods of practice, through a diverse set of project types and scales of intervention, coaxing nuance and specificity from the unique opportunities of the site and project at hand.
E.B. Min, AIAE.B. Min is the San Francisco based principal of Min | Day. An honors graduate of Brown University with dual concentrations in Art History and Studio Art, she began her architectural studies as a cross-registered student at Rhode Island School of Design. She received her Master of Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley and she is a licensed architect in California. E.B.’s experience in the landscape architecture office of Delaney and Cochran nurtured her interest in the integration of landscapes and buildings. E.B. has taught at U.C. Berkeley and is an Adjunct Professor in the Masters of Architecture Program at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. E.B. is a director of the AIA San Francisco chapter.

Jeffrey L. Day, AIAJeffrey L. Day, the Omaha-based principal of Min | Day, is Professor of Architecture & Landscape Architecture and director of the Architecture Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1988, with an AB in Visual and Environmental Studies and received a Master of Architecture from U.C. Berkeley in 1995. At UNL Jeff runs FACT (Fabrication And Construction Team). an award-winning, academic/professional collaborative design lab.

FACT

FACT (Fabrication And Construction Team) is an allied practice and frequent collaborator of the architecture firm Min | Day. FACT engages design intensive projects and creative, non-profit clients in collaborations that span design and construction. In such a practice the boundaries that conventionally distinguish the profession of architecture are eroded to admit other disciplines ordinarily thought of as distinct. Under Professor Jeffrey L. Day’s leadership, FACT operates an academic/professional collaborative design lab that offers students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, College of Architecture a forum for exploration aimed at expanding the understanding of the complex relationships between thinking (conceiving, designing, theorizing) and making. FACT is a “do-tank”, a lab in which ideas and new knowledge are developed though action as well as thought. Where academic design studios focus on ideation, conceptualization and a little design development, FACT offers students an opportunity to focus on the creative opportunities embedded in the development and realization of projects. Such a practice allows production to influence design as much as design directs production.

FACT has worked with Min | Day on ongoing projects for the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Art Farm, The Sheldon Museum of Art, Community CROPS, the Salina Art Center and on several exhibitions and installations. In order to realize projects, FACT frequently partners with builders, fabricators and other makers such as Cornhusker State Industries, the Nebraska State Prison’s fabrication shop management company. FACT has won numerous design awards including ACSA’s first ever national Design Build Award in 2013. FACT projects have been published widely.
